Portadown put the disappointment of this weeks European exit behind them as they took on Mexico (u19) International team at Shamrock Park this evening. Despite on returning to Northern Ireland only 24hrs earlier, the Ports fielded a number of the players who took on Qarabagh in Azerbaijan on Thursday evening. The match itself was competitive with the agile Mexicans matching the strength of the local players. However it was the Ports who took the lead mid-way through the first half when Henry McStay slotted home from the penalty box following a hand ball in the opponents 18 yard box.
The Ports survived a near miss towards the end of the half when Neil Armstrong lost out in a 50:50 tackle and could only watch as the ball trundled towards the onguarded goals only to be cleared off the line by Matthew Paget, who had an outstanding game. It was that man Paget, who was ondoubtably man of the match, who got the Ports second with a bullet of a header from the edge of the Mexican 18 yard box which flew into the top corner of the net giving the keeper no chance.
The young Mexicans weren't done and pulled one back through neat interplay at the edge of the box which saw their no18 place a curling shot out of Armstrong's reach into the corner of the net. Five minutes from the end, Mexico drew level in controversial circumstances as Neil Armstrong, attempting to dribble the ball around two advancing Mexican players, appeared to be fouled and as he lay on the ground the young Mexican walked the ball into the net. Despite the protests of the Ports players and bench, the goal stood and the match ended 2-2. Overall a fair result for an entertaining game. The main talking point has to be the performance of Matthew Paget who appears to be staking a big claim in the first team this season.
