Portadown struggled tonight against a re-juvenated Glenavon, but came away with another important victory in their quest for a top six place. Ports centreback Andy Hunter was the hero, popping up with a crucial header in the 68th minute to sink Glenavons hopes of a victory over their mid-Ulster rivals.
In truth, it was a smash and grab from the Ports as Glenavon had most of the possession, but prodcued little threat in front of goal and anything they did get was comfortably dealt with by David Miskelly in the Ports goal. In a typical derby game, the challenges in midfield were robust with Glenavon bossing the centre of the pitch with McDonagh and Johnston pulling the strings. Molloy gave Mackle a torrid time in the first half but the young right back came out in top in the second half as Molloy faded. The Ports will feel hard done by when Dickson appeared to handle a Baker cross near the byeline in the second half, but despite a huge call from all the Ports team and fans, the referees assistant ignored the claims. The same official missed a blatant kick by a Glenavon player on Baker minutes later as the home side grew more and more frustrated with their inability to turn possession into goals. As it was the Ports came away with another victory and another massive step towards the covetted sixth spot in the league.
Just Linfield to go on Tuesday night and, on the evidence of Portadowns recent run of results, the blues may well be concerned about whats coming to them. This rollercoaster ride of a season is on a roll and its gathering pace.
