One of the biggest crowds seen at Newforge in recent years witnessed a game of two halves – all too common!!
Hot promotion favourites Portadown FC arrived at Newforge hoping to continue their 100% record in the Bluefinsport Championship.
The game was barely 7 minutes in progress when a police tackle inside the box took out Matty Hazley. Niall Henderson stepped up to take the spot kick. No surprise when Jordan Williamson, in the police goal, and in the current Northern Ireland Amateur Squad, provided an unbelievable save. Unfortunately the ball fell to Henderson who tapped the ball into the net. 1 – 0 to Portadown
The remainder of the first half display from Portadown was like watching poetry in motion. They completely dominated. Some lovely movements, a delight to watch, but no finishing touches. Maybe this was due to lady luck and a stubborn police defence.
The second half was a different story. Within 1 minute of the restart the police took a quick free kick. The ball was laid out to Chris Watts on the right wing and he advanced on goal and fired a powerful shot into the back of the Portadown net, leaving John Connolly with no chance.
From then on the police dominated the second half. The change in formation was obvious and it paid dividends.
It was all police pressure and indeed they had a number of chances to take the lead. Joe McWilliams, Ashton McDermott and Chris Watts testing the Portadown ‘keeper.
There was one wonder save from Williamson on 86 minutes when he turned away a fantastic effort form Chris Laverty.
