Ports Confirm Gary Twigg Signing
Portadown today unveiled their latest signing with the introduction to the press of Gary Twigg. The former Shamrock Rovers striker will officially join the Shamrock Park club in January on a 3.5 year contract, having signed a pre-contract agreement with The Ports. Manager Ronnie McFall was understandably delighted to at last get has man and stated ,
“We have been chasing Gary for a long time, as we usually do, it goes without saying that when someone of his quality comes along, we will try to sign him. We have always had Scotsmen in the team, and he comes from across the water. He is right up there with Cowan, Fraser, Arkins and Haylock and his signing is a boost for the whole League”.
The Scotsman will bring some much needed firepower to the Ports front line, having scored 81 league goals in 111 league outings for Rovers. A remarkable strike rate, and one which saw him finish in eighth place in the all-time league goal scoring charts for the Dublin club. In total Gary scored 89 goals for Rovers in his four seasons with The Hoops, and looking ahead he said,
“As Ronnie said, they have been chasing me for a while, and Portadown have been the only club I have met with. The Chairman and manager have met with me on 3 or 4 occasions and I liked what they had to say. I agreed to join the club in the summer, and wanted the news to come out earlier, but for obvious reasons it was right to leave Shamrock Rovers on good terms. The manager and Chairman are very positive and assured me of their desire for success for the club, and I want to be a part of that and win trophies”.
