Ports Defeat Welders in Pre-Season Friendly
Portadown continued in their build-up to the new season with a 3-nil victory at home to Harland and Wolff Welders. The Welders provided stiff opposition and were a match for the Ports for most of the first half. The Ports, who rested McCafferty, Lecky, O’Hara and Mackle in the first half found it difficult to create any real scoring opportunities against the hard-working East Belfast team. However, once McCafferty and Mackle were brought on for the second period then the Ports had the edge and created more goal scoring opportunities. Mackle scored the opener with a sweet drive from just inside the box after cutting in from the right wing. McNeill scored a second after a series of one touch passes from midfield opened up the Welders defence for the midfielder to slot home with his left foot from inside the box. The final goal was a beauty of a volley created and finished by an un-named guest player who played in midfield alongside McNeill.
Portadowns pre-season friendlies continue next week with the visit on Wednesday evening of Belfast side Malachians with former Ports star Micky Collins. Then next Saturday Newry City visit Shamrock.
